Web Link: | Richard Page Since picking up the tenor saxophone in high school, Richard Page has never looked back. A native of Hamilton, Richard studied jazz at Mohawk College, where he was awarded the Noreen and Phil Nimmons Memorial Scholarship twice, in 2005 and 2007. At Mohawk, Richard was also fortunate to study with several renowned musicians including Darcy Hepner, Pat Collins, Kevin Dempsey, Mike Malone, Adrean Farrugia and Dave McMurdo. Between 2004 and 2008, Richard was a member of the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band. Richard quickly became one of the All Star’s featured soloists. In July 2007, the All Stars undertook a three week European tour, appearing at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Throughout his career, Richard has performed with many of North America’s top jazz artists including JUNO award winner David Braid, Ranee Lee, Rick Wilkins, Ted Warren, Dave McMurdo, Bob Brookmeyer, Nick Marchione, and Darcy Hepner, formerly of Blood, Sweat, and Tears. He has also studied with Jan Garbarek, Kirk MacDonald, Mike Murley, and Quinsin Natchoff. After moving to Ottawa, Richard was selected to play in the National Jazz Youth Summit Big Band under the direction of Jim Lewis. This group of twenty of the best young jazz musicians from across Canada appeared on the main stage at the 2008 Ottawa International Jazz Festival. Richard currently spends his time composing for and performing with various groups around Ottawa. |
