Jarrod Goldsmith

While only in this mid-thirties, Jarrod has been playing and studying the saxophone for almost 25 years. Jarrod has traveled extensively pursuing both music and archaeology in places such as Japan, South Korea, Israel, throughout Europe, as well as across North America.

Originally from Montreal, Jarrod began playing with the CJAD All Star City Big Band (under the direction of Denny Christianson) in grade 9. At Musicfest 1992 in Halifax, he was selected to join the All Star band at the closing ceremonies.

While pursuing a B.A. Honors degree in archaeology/ anthropology at McGill University, Jarrod studied with the late Professor Gerry Danovitch. During this time, he played in numerous McGill ensembles and bands, notably the Generations Big Band (directed by George Doxas), and the Lakeshore Concert Band (directed by Professor Tom Talamantes and later by Mark Dharmaratnam).

While earning a Masters degree in archaeology/anthropology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Jarrod played in Jazz Band 1 under the direction of Raymond Baril. In 1999, Jarrod joined a professional hi-octane Latin band called Orchestra Energia (directed by Roberto Heirrera) and gigged throughout Western Canada.

He recorded an album with Jeari Czapla titled 'For Ella' in the year 2000. It went on to win Best Jazz or Blues Album at the 2001 Aboriginal Music Awards, received an award for Outstanding Jazz Recording at the 2002 Prairie Music Awards and was short-listed in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category at the 2002 Juno Awards.

Upon moving to Ottawa in 2003, Jarrod began playing with many bands, notably Big Band Caravane (directed by Kieran Milne), Alternate Takes (directed by Jean Trudel), and the FunKtion. He is a regular in the Ottawa music scene and welcomes the opportunity to sub-in on alto, tenor or bari when the opportunity arises.

Jarrod brings much enthusiasm and charisma to every gig. If you are looking for the good old Tower of Power sound coming from a guy whose not afraid to get down and get dirty honkin' away all day on the big bad bari sax, he's your guy!
